Aisha Jibrin, 30, has been taken into custody by the Niger State Police Command. On Monday, she organized a large-scale demonstration in Minna, the state capital, where she spoke out against the high cost of living.
Aisha was taken into custody together with 22 other women, including 43-year-old Fatima Isyaku and 57-year-old Fatima Aliyu.
Niger State women and youths protested on Monday in the streets of Minna against what they described as the harsh reality and growing expense of life in the nation.
A deployment of police operatives to the scene could not stop the youth from the protest as some of them could be heard saying that the police were the agents of the government and they could not do anything.
However, announcing the arrest of Aisha and two of her colleagues in a statement on Wednesday, the Niger State Police Command alleged that the protesters were violent
At the well-known Kpakungu Roundabout, a group of women led by Aisha blocked Minna-Bida Road in protest of what they perceived to be the suffering caused by the Bola Tinubu administration.
Men and young people joined them later, halting the motion of driving automobiles.
It could be recalled that on February 5, 2024, at approximately 7 a.m., a large group of women and miscreants mobilized and blocked the Minna-Bida road and the Kpakungu Roundabout, claiming to be protesting the price increase of food. This caused a significant obstruction on the highway and prevented drivers, travelers, and other road users from getting access to attend to their legal business.
The demonstrators were persuaded to clear the road for public use after the command sent police patrol teams led by DCP Shehu Didango, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations. His Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba, also made himself available at the scene and spoke to the group, but
The aforementioned Aisha stated during questioning that she was unaware that her action—organizing more than 100 ladies and miscreants to block the highway in anticipation of a violent protest—was against the law. She said further that she told a local young leader named Hassan about their plan to protest, and he pledged to let the police know, but he never did.
Meanwhile, efforts are on to apprehend further recognized participants in the violent protest. All suspects were brought to SCID Minna for investigation, and they will face charges in court
