Why we agreed to pay the NLC minimum wage of N70,000 on July 18, 2024

On Thursday, Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, explained why Organized Labor approved President Bola Tinubu’s proposal for a minimum salary of N70,000.

After the discussion with the President, Ajaero told State House media that the unions accepted the offer because there were additional incentives included.

He added, “The President promised a review every three years as opposed to what obtained in the past,” as another justification for accepting the offer.

According to Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, the president authorized the national minimum wage of N70,000 on Thursday.

According to reports, Tinubu revealed the increased pay during an Abuja meeting with the Organized Labour leadership.

The President’s initial meeting with the Labour leaders took place one week before to this Thursday’s gathering

The N30,000 minimum salary, which expired on April 18, 2024, will be replaced by the new minimum wage if it is approved by the National Assembly.

“Breaking: President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years,” stated Onanuga in a post made via his official X handle, @aonanuga, at precisely 03:31 p.m.

“President Tinubu also pledged to look for measures to help sub-nationals and the private sector pay the minimum wage.

“On Thursday in Abuja, President Tinubu made the announcements during the second meeting between the heads of the TUC and NLC in a span of seven days.

The leaders of the Labour Party praised President Tinubu for his fatherly gesture, and he pledged to utilize his discretionary powers to satisfy the requests of university unions seeking unpaid salary for a full year
