Nigerians complain about the exorbitant cost of rice, poultry, onions, and other foods at Christmas.

As Nigerians join the rest of the globe in celebrating Christmas and New Year’s, the high cost of essential food products and cooking supplies dampened the joyful atmosphere for many.

When compared to the previous year’s Christmas season, residents and vendors of necessities who were interviewed voiced concerns about the exorbitant costs and how they strain their finances

Following the execution of certain of the economic initiatives of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, such as the removal of the gasoline subsidy and the floating of the naira, the price increases became severe.

Many Nigerians staged a nationwide demonstration titled #EndbadgovernanceinNigeria to voice their anger with the cost of living crises and growing inflation rates.

In the last 18 months, the federal government has implemented policies aimed at easing the nation’s suffering. These policies include the recent increase in the minimum wage, food subsidies, and the provision of agricultural inputs to farmers in an effort to increase the nation’s food production

ast year, a kilogram of frozen chicken would have cost between N2000 and N2,500, but today it averages N5,000.

Similarly, depending on size, live chicken (broilers) can cost anywhere from N15,000 (medium size) to N40,000. In many marketplaces, live turkey birds cost N100,000 or more, whereas previous year, they were sold for N40,000 to N50,000 or more.

The difficulties faced by the nation’s poultry producers, who are fighting to maintain production in the face of growing livestock feed and input costs, are partially to blame for the birds’ high pricing.
