About 21, 580 traffic offenders were apprehended by the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, between January and December 2024 across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
Additionally, the corps disclosed that 411 people nationwide lost their lives while scouting gasoline in 2024.
The revelation was revealed by FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed on Monday in Abuja while speaking to reporters about the 2024 special patrol activities.
Mohammed claims that the corps reported fewer offenders in 2024 compared to 29,220 during the same time period in 2023.
“This represents a 26% increase in adherence to traffic laws and regulations,” he clarified.
According to him, there were 31,154 injuries in 2024 compared to 31,874 in 2023, which is a 2% drop.
According to him, the corps reported a 7% rise in fatalities, with 5,421 persons killed in 2024 compared to 5,081 in 2023.
According to the FRSC Corps Marshal, 411 deaths, or 7.6% of all deaths in 2024, were not primarily caused by crashes but rather by a secondary factor that he referred to as the very monster the corps was fighting: the removal of fuel from demolished tankers.
He claimed that the Corps would have reported 5,010 fatalities in 2024 if not for the deaths resulting from collecting fuel from downed trucks.
